I startled awake
before the snooze alarm screamed
the familiar sense of urgent responsibility
shook me into consciousness
but Nubs was absent from her nightstand perch
and Yttik didn't nuzzle in my armpit like she does
an empty nest
a little reality check
eleven days left
in Maine
